Children read whole books here. Not extracts, not an anthology of passages chosen because they suit a question type — whole books, from the first page to the last, out loud in class for the younger years.

This costs time we do not really have, and it is the single thing we would defend hardest if asked to cut something. A pupil who has only ever met literature in eight-hundred-word fragments has learned to answer questions about writing without ever having been absorbed by any.

Written work is marked for argument before it is marked for accuracy. Both get marked.
